I really should learn my lesson…
Just spent 30 minutes writing a long post about the end of Helium and Herschel’s scientific legacy, only to see WordPress lose it completely.
So just a quick summary he – Herschel running out of helium so the mission will end in the next few weeks. Hugely successful, will have a great legacy. Ground based observations with ALMA and the threatened-with-closure JCMT will be great, and new missions SPICA and FIRI proposed to take far-IR astronomy into the future – though, in SPICA’s case, without any UK mission involvement.
The original version was much better written than that – honest!
